Effective — to supply —
1. What our analytics is
We run Umami, an open-source analytics tool, on our own server. No data about your visit is sent to an analytics company, because no analytics company is involved. Counting happens on infrastructure we control, alongside the magazine itself.
2. What it collects and derives
When you open a page, our server records the page address, the time, your browser and device type, your screen-size class, the referring site, and a country or region derived from your network address. To count one visitor without identifying you, the server computes a hashed visitor identifier from your IP address, browser signature, and the site, mixed with a secret salt. That salt rotates monthly, so the identifier cannot connect your visits across months, and it is never surfaced to us as anything other than a count. What we review is aggregate: which pieces are read, how many readers, approximate region, and device class.
3. What it never collects
No raw IP address is stored. Analytics places no cookie or other identifier on your device. There is no cross-site tracking, no advertising identifier, no ad-tech of any kind, no profiling, and no sale of data. Query strings are excluded from recorded page addresses, so tokens and search terms in a URL are not captured. The tool’s own telemetry back to its maker is disabled.
4. Retention and your choice
Aggregate analytics data is retained for 24 months and then deleted under our retention schedule.
Our reading statistics are opt-in, so nothing is counted until you accept them. You can change your choice at any time from the cookie-preferences control in the footer. Turning them off stops this browser from sending anything to our analytics from that point. Your choice is stored on your own device, so clearing your site data resets it.
5. The cookies we set
| Cookie | Purpose | Lifetime | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Session cookie | Keeps you signed in between pages | Session, short-lived | Strictly necessary, first-party |
| CSRF cookie | Protects forms against forged requests | Session | Strictly necessary, first-party |
| Display preference | Day mode or the lamplit night, and your chosen reading form | Persistent, device-local | Functional preference you set, first-party |
That is the complete list. There are no advertising cookies and no third-party tracking cookies, and there are no analytics cookies, because our analytics is cookieless.
6. Consent, and European law
We ask before we count. Cookies that are strictly necessary to deliver what you requested, and preferences you set yourself, do not require separate consent. Our reading statistics are different, and we treat them as opt-in. On your first visit we ask whether you consent to them, and nothing is counted unless you accept. You can change your choice at any time from the cookie-preferences control in the footer. This rests on the knowledge-and-consent framework in Canadian privacy law, informed by this notice and our Privacy Policy.
The extended consent walls common elsewhere are largely a feature of European law applying to sites that target Europe. Kalam Di Goonj is a Canadian publication, priced in Canadian dollars, that does not direct its services or marketing to the EU or UK. We maintain a written analysis of that position and revisit it if our footing changes. If we introduce anything that tracks or profiles readers, we will change the consent we ask for to match, and we will tell you before we do.
7. Embedded videos
Some articles embed YouTube videos. We use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced (nocookie) mode, and the embed loads from YouTube only when you press play. Until then, nothing is requested from YouTube. Once playing, YouTube’s own terms and privacy policy apply to the player. Our External Links & Embeds notice explains how we handle external media. YouTube does not endorse the Publication and is not responsible for it.
8. Changes and contact
If our analytics or cookies change, this page changes first, with an updated date, and material changes are flagged under our Privacy Policy’s change rules. Questions: Privacy Officer, [email protected]. All channels are listed on our Contact page.
